Audio Postcards
http://generation.prx.org/group/diyradioproject/forum/topics/825456:Topic:9663
An Audio Postcard is a short radio piece that tells a listener about a place without using narration. Audio Postcards have a lot of sound in the form of ambient noise, music, conversation, and more, in order to tell the story without narration. I wrote some basic instructions for making an audio postcard below. Making an Audio Postcard is the same as writing a paper postcard. Except when you send an audio postcard, you don’t need to pay postage.
When you are sifting through your mail, and you see a postcard, the first thing you look at is the picture on the front. The picture draws you in, and gives you a visual of the place the postcard is from. The first sound of your postcard should do just that. Get sounds from the setting that will enable people to visualize where you are. That sound should be first, just like the picture on the front of a postcard.
If you were going to send a postcard from Hawaii, it would have a picture of a tropical beach on the front. To give the listener that beautiful blue watered beach, record the ambient noise of the beach like waves, seagulls, etc.
Then, you flip over the postcard, and read the letter. The first sentence is usually along the lines of “Hello ____! (Place where you are) is fabulous! Find a way to let the listener know exactly where you are, and what it’s like there. In the postcard from Hawaii, a news report of the weather would serve this purpose, “it’s 77 degrees today in Hawaii.” You can ask people leading questions to get them to say certain details you might want in your postcard.
Then you go on to tell your friend about all the fabulous activities you are doing. Put in the sounds of those activities. In the Hawaiian postcard, sounds of people playing on the beach, and of a tour guide’s spiel would be good.
Then find a nice way to end the postcard. This is the part that says: “Wish you were here.” To end the Hawaii postcard, native Hawaiian music that slowly faded out would do the trick.
An audio postcard should not take more time to listen to than it would to read a postcard. If you make it too long, but don’t cover the subject in depth like you do in a story, then it will be boring.
When making an Audio Postcard, don’t limit the sounds you use. Conversations, music, ambient noise, machinery, etc., anything that will take the listener from where they are, to where the postcard is from will be good to use. If the place you are visiting doesn’t lend itself as easily a Hawaii, just remember that an audio postcard should tell the listener where you are, what it’s like, and what you are doing there.
If you would like to see an example, you can listen to the Audio Postcard I made, go to http://www.kuow.org/mp3high/mp3/Weekday_High/20070814_wehigh.mp3. The first half is a story about Dog Show training, and the second half is an audio postcard from the basketball courts on the shores on Greenlake in Seattle

Research I Did So Far
I gathered the content I need for the countries I'll be using for my website
The images used are open source images that I'm allowed use for the purpose of this project
Looked at other interactive travel sites to see how I could make my site user friendly and easy to look at

Final Project Proposal MP5
Introduction
My project proposal idea for media project 5 is to create a flash based interactive site where the user can select a country of their choice throughout South America or one they may have an interest in and learn and find out about the country's history, culture and attractions.
Background
The project theme that I chose was UNESCO International Year for the Rapproachment of Cultures. On the UNESCO website it talks a lot about improving communication between cultures so my target audience is aimed all age groups from starting from young teenagers moving upwards and generally people who like to travel and explore different cultures.
Aims
This website will provide users with a general knowledge of the different background and culture of each country in South America. They will be able to take a journey and explore the history, the lifestyle and look up the attractions of the particular country. They will also be able to look up the best places to travel to and sites to see.
Objectives
Scale down the amount of information I provide on the website and keep it to a minimum as I wont have the time to include everything but on a larger scale the project has potential and could be expanded a lot more.
Draw up sketches of the website and layout of content on each page
Planning - draw out gnatt chart for schedule of work
Carry out research on the countries in South America

Project Proposal Media Project 5
Introduction
My project proposal idea for media project 5 is to create a web based interactive site by where the user can learn and test their knowledge on ancient and current civilisations throughout Europe. There will be a quiz at the end of each section depending on what country the user pics and there score will be kept so that they can keep track of their progress and compare how much they know about one particular country to the next.
Background
The project theme that I chose was UNESCO International Year for the Rapproachment of Cultures. On the UNESCO website it talks a lot about improving communication between cultures through education so my target audience is aimed at secondary school students aged 16 and over, people who like to travel and anyone who'd have a genaral interest in learning about different civilisations in Europe.
Aims
The website is a learning tool and can be accessable through internet or mobile phone. Its an education tool where by the user can not only find out about other civilisation around Europe but also learn a bit about their own as well and having fun while doing it.
Objectives
I need to carry out research on the differnet countries in Europe
Time management, I might not have time to do each country so I've to draw up a project plan and create a prototype of what the site could look like and what it could potentionally be
Take a look at my resources, what is available to me and can what I want to do be achieved
Planning out the steps I need to take to get my project going so I can stat taking in steps furthur to it being completed.

Presentation Feedback
After giving my project presentation today, I've to go back and rethink my project idea and do more research on it, I need to change my idea to make it a lot more interesting, think of how it'll look visually and brainstorm a few more ideas. I'll post uo my project proposal when its completed before next week.

Project Idea
The theme I chose for media project 5 was the "Reproachment of Culture". My main focus was on cultural diversity in Europe even though were part of the same continent were made up of many different cultures. No two countries are the same each one is different in its own right so my idea was to set up an interactive web based site where you have a map of Europe and the user can click on the country of there choice and there'll be a pop up on screen where it'll display name of the country, what its famous for e'g food clothes who's the head of state, what's the countries national language, backgrounds, religion etc.
The target audience I chose was secondary school students aged 16 years and more and people who in general like to travel and find out about where they're going before they get there. My reason for this is I want the website to be educational and help people to be more open about different cultures and learn more about the culture in others countries as well as there own.
